Name: Lisa Luna

Hometown: I wasn’t born in Chicago but I spent 32 years there so I call it home.

Age: 55

Job: Ultrasound tech specializing in ob/gyn for 19 years

CrossFitting since: July 2016

Favorite WOD or movement: I don’t so much have a favorite WOD, but I like the high cardio chipper WODs where we just keep moving and sweating. I really like doing abs work as well.

Least favorite WOD or movement: Everyone hates burpees, right? But i could live without doing a thruster ever again!

What music do you prefer to work out to?
I like to have music on when working out…it covers all the moans and groans! But I really don’t have a preference. If I was running on my own or could make a playlist it would include pop music, Lady Gaga, Fergie, Beyoncé, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesia and others.

What’s your CrossFit routine?
I do the 6pm workouts and the 10am on the weekends. On the weekend I try to give myself a couple of hours to drink coffee and some protein. Before the evening workouts, I have a protein shake or bar of some sort. I cannot eat much before. It won’t sit well! I always try to get in at least 15 minutes early to stretch my old bones.

Is CrossFit your go-to workout or do you combine with other activities?
I don’t do any other workouts but I do stretch each morning at home for about 15 minutes just to start the day.

What is your fitness background? What were you doing before CrossFit?
I have no fitness background. Prior to CrossFit I was overweight and super busy raising my daughter. Once I started CrossFit I lost 65 pounds in the first 10 months and now have kept it off for over a year.

How would you describe CrossFit Prospect Heights — what has your experience here been like?
I tried a couple of other gyms prior to finding CFPH. I moved from Chicago a year ago and was trying to find a gym where I felt comfortable, and CFPH was my third and final try. I felt welcomed and not too conspicuous with all the very young people at the gym. Maillard and James were not at all judgmental. It can be intimidating walking into a box as an older woman, but people were friendly and helpful and the coaches were great in the scale options I got. I felt comfortable quickly and have been very happy there.

Now, I recommend CFPH to anyone I can. Most people who haven’t tried CrossFit don’t have a clue how good it can make you feel, and how great it is to feel a part of a group, a community. Being new to a big city like NYC I needed a place to be comfortable and happy and see friendly faces. I know that no matter how hard the workout is, that my friends are suffering too! It’s a great way to bond.

Anything else?
I am a big supporter of CrossFit, and I know that anyone can do it. I am proof.
